Be Our Guest! Tips to create a warm, cozy, and inviting room for your overnight guests to call “home” for the duration of their stay

I come from a large family who visit often.  When they come to visit, I want them to feel right a home.

Here are a few tips I use to create a warm, cozy, and inviting room for our overnight guests.

  1. Keep a Neutral Color Pallet

  • Keeping the paint color a neutral beige or grey allows for endless possibilities when it comes to decorating the space, plus it will help make the room feel bigger as opposed to using a darker paint color.
  • mix and match fabric pattens and textures for added interest
  • layer similar colors.
  • let your furniture make a statement.  Choose a contrasting darker wood tone bed frame and night stand.DSCN2548

  1. Make It Smell Nice

  • The last thing you want your guests to think is that your home stinks.  I keep a wallflower plug in, from Bath and Body Works, going at all times in numerous rooms in my house.
  • Stay consistent.  Find a subtle scent and stick with it.  Memories are strongly tied to scent, so make it a scent your guests will remember.
  • Always change the bedding after every guest.
  • Buy two sets of sheets.  Keep the second set in a plastic bag with a dryer sheet, so they always smell fresh.
  • The day before my anticipated guests arrival, I like to lightly spray febreze fabric refresher on the comforter and throw pillows.DSCN2532
  1. Declutter and Keep It Simple

  • Do not, I repeat, DO NOT use your guest room as a storage room!  Or if you do, make sure to clean it out before your guests arrive.  Keep it out of sight, either in totes under the bed or stacked neatly in the guest closet.  You don’t want your guests to feel like they you don’t have room for them!
  • Don’t overdecorate.  Less is more and will help the space feel less cramped.DSCN2545
  1. Turn Down The Lights

  • Once again, no harsh overhead lighting.
  • Create a relaxing ambiance with dimly lit lamps and candles.
  • Give the room a spa like feel- one that they will feel completely at ease in.DSCN2544
  1. Soften It Up

    • It’s sometimes hard to fall asleep in a unfamiliar place, so why add to the difficulty by providing a hard, squeaky mattress or less than comfortable bedding?
    • Give your guests a good mattress and plenty of pillows in a variety of firmness.  We all know the right pillow and mattress can make all the difference.
    • Keep several plush blankets and throws at the foot of the bed and allow guests to layer as needed.
    • Hang sheer, white curtains to soften the space.DSCN2546DSCN2538
